Alcohol and Other Drugs

Leavers WA is an alcohol, drug, smoke and vape free event, but we recognise that some young people may still choose to use alcohol or other drugs during the celebratory period.
The safest option is to not use alcohol or other drugs. Young people are more vulnerable to their effects, and every person responds differently. Choosing not to use substances is the best way to make sure your Leavers experience is safe, enjoyable and memorable.
If young people do choose to use alcohol or other drugs, it is important they know how to reduce the risk of harm to themselves and others. Some simple safety tips include:
Stay hydrated by drinking plenty of water.
Eat regular meals and avoid drinking on an empty stomach.
Protect yourself from the sun by staying in the shade and wearing sunscreen, protective clothing, sunglasses and a hat.
Do not mix alcohol with other drugs, including prescription medication, as the effects can be unpredictable.
Do not accept alcohol or drugs from people you do not know.
Use a buddy system and talk with your friends before Leavers about how you plan to look out for each other.
Update the emergency information on your phone so first responders can quickly access important medical details and emergency contacts.
If you or your friends start to feel unwell, seek help immediately from any of the onsite support services.
Never drive a vehicle, including an eRideable, if you have been drinking or using drugs. Do not get into a vehicle if you think the driver is affected.
Remember that alcohol and other drugs can impair your decision making and your ability to give or recognise consent.
