What the Police Expect from You

Obey the law and keep the peace

WA Police Force want everyone in the community to be safe and to keep the peace, including young people attending Leavers and locals in the host community.

Police will be present throughout Leavers to help maintain a safe and enjoyable environment for everyone. Please treat Police with respect, just as you would like to be treated. Show respect for yourself and others, including fellow Leavers, staff, volunteers and the local community. If you choose to behave unlawfully or unsafely, Police may take action. It is important to remember that your behaviour has consequences.

Make your parents and loved ones proud by how you conduct yourself. No one wants their Leavers experience cut short, and no parent wants Police at their door late at night.

This means:

  • No drinking alcohol in public. It is an offence to drink in public places such as streets, parks or beaches. Penalties include a $200 infringement notice or up to a $3,000 fine if prosecuted in court.

  • No drugs. If Police suspect you are using, selling or supplying drugs, you may be stopped and searched in accordance with the law.

  • No fighting or antisocial behaviour. Antisocial, aggressive or intimidating behaviour will not be tolerated. Attendees who fail to comply with Event Terms and Conditions may be refused entry or removed from Leavers WA events or services.

  • Respect others online. Think before you post, comment or share.

Young drivers

Heading off to Leavers is exciting and it may be your first long road trip. There are many inexperienced drivers on the roads at this time of year, and crashes are commonly linked with tiredness, alcohol or inexperience.

  • Tom’s Law: passenger limit for red P‑platers. From 1 December 2024, red P‑plate drivers are limited to one passenger at all times, with specific exemptions for an experienced driver, immediate family members or work requirements where the driver carries an employer letter. The penalty for breaching the passenger restriction is a $200 fine and two demerit points. The midnight to 5 am curfew for red P‑platers continues to apply.

  • Zero Blood Alcohol Concentration for L and P drivers. Full licence holders must be below 0.05%. Do not Drink and Drive.

  • Do not use a mobile phone while driving. High‑risk use such as texting, social media or video can attract a $1,000 infringement and four demerit points. Holding a phone to make a call is $500 and three demerit points.

  • Do not drive tired. Share the driving where possible and aim to switch drivers at least every two hours. Use “driver reviver” stops when available.

  • Seatbelts are compulsory. Drivers must wear a seatbelt and are legally responsible for ensuring passengers are properly restrained. Penalties start at $550 and four demerit points, increasing if multiple passengers are unrestrained.

  • Hoon laws apply. Reckless driving and similar offences can lead to on‑the‑spot vehicle impoundment and escalating penalties, including longer impound periods or possible confiscation for repeat offences.
