Harm Minimisation Tips

  • Leavers WA activities are drug, alcohol, smoke and vape free. Choosing to celebrate without using any substances is the safest option for you and your mates.

  • If you do choose to drink alcohol, use drugs, smoke or vape, please be safe and seek help immediately if you are not feeling right. Support services are available across the event to assist you.

  • Stay with your mates. Keep an eye on each other, check in often and speak up if someone seems unwell or unsafe.

  • Use the free support services, first aid teams, youth workers and volunteers are on site at official Leavers WA locations. If something does not feel right, go to them straight away.

  • Keep hydrated and take breaks. Hot days, long walks and excitement can lead to dehydration. Carry a water bottle, drink regularly and rest in the shade.

  • Be sun safe. Use sunscreen, wear a hat and sunglasses, and avoid long periods in direct sunlight.

  • Plan safe transport to and from the event. Remember you can only get to the Zone or Beachfest on a designated Leavers bus. Never get into a car with someone who has been drinking or using drugs.

  • Know where to get help at the Zone:

  • WAAC volunteers are on hand to offer outreach, information, education and referrals, with an emphasis on harm reduction and supporting safer sex, sexual health and safer alcohol and other drug use.

  • Red Frogs are at the Zone and on Outreach offering 24/7 Hotline, assisting school leavers in many different ways, offering pancake cook-ups, room visits & games, room cleans, emotional support, walk homes and red frogs.

  • Red Frogs 24hour Hotline: 1300 557 123

  • Protect your belongings. Keep your phone, ID and wallet with you. Use secure storage if your accommodation provides it.

  • Know the laws. There are fines for offences such as underage drinking, disorderly behaviour, vaping and smoking in restricted areas, Tom’s Law and camping in prohibited locations.

  • Bring warm clothes the Zone can get very cold throughout the night.

  • Respect your accommodation. Follow the house rules to avoid being fined or asked to leave.

  • Trust your instincts. If a situation feels unsafe or uncomfortable, move away and ask for help from security, volunteers or medical staff.
