Tips for Leavers

1. Look after yourself. Look after your mates.

  • Stay with friends at all times. Don’t walk around by yourself.
  • Have a safe place to go or call the WA Police if you feel your safety is threatened.
  • Organise a designated meeting place in case you get separated from your group.
  • If fights break out, walk away. Don’t get involved.
  • Keep useful contacts, your mobile phone or a phone card with you at all times.
  • If you experience any problems, contact the WA Police or volunteers from any of the support services. They’re around to help make your celebrations as safe as possible.

    3. Wear the Leavers wristbands.
    • Depending on where you celebrate, two wristbands may be available during Leavers.
    • Both wristbands have separate purposes.

    i. Accommodation Wristband
    • This wristband will prove you are staying at your caravan park or hotel.
    • It aims to keep you safe by reducing trespassing.
    • The wristband may be given to you when you arrive at your accommodation site.
    • It is usually a condition in your accommodation contract that you wear a wristband.

      ii. Official 2010 Leavers Wristband
    • 2010 secondary school leavers can purchase a LeaversWristband to access a range of activities, discounts and services in the Busselton – Dunsborough area and on Rottnest Island.
    • The wristbands also assist police to identify school leavers and keep ‘toolies’ away from celebrations to make your celebrations safer and more enjoyable.
    • Available for purchase during the official Leavers period: Tuesday 23 and Friday 26 November 2010. For more information click here.

    4. Respect the town and comunity you're visiting.
    • Most communities have spent 12 months and many hours planning to make your Leavers a good one. Respect their community and property.
    • To avoid eviction, keep noise to a minimum. Your neighbours may be working or going to school during Leavers. They won’t hassle you if you don’t hassle them.
    • Respect and care for the local flora and fauna in the towns you visit

    5. Know the rules of your accommodation manager.

      • One of the easiest ways to be evicted or have your Leavers end early is to upset your neighbours or accommodation manager
      • Whether the rules come from your accommodation manager, the WA Police or local rangers, make sure you know them.

    6. Keep your valuables safe.

      • If you bring valuable items to Leavers, keep them on you at all times or store them in a safe and secure place.
      • Check if your accommodation provider has lockers for your valuable items.
      • Hide your valuables in your vehilce. Don’t leave them where they can be seen. If you must carry them then hide them away in the boot or the glove box, but not when you arrive as thieves maybe watching you.

        7. Stay safe when travelling.

    • Before you go, plan how you will get there, and how you will get home.
    • Tell people where you’re going and when you’ll be back.
    • Don’t accept rides with people you don’t know.
    • A driver is legally responsible for all passengers in his or her vehicle and to ensure that seat belts are worn by all passengers.
    • Driving and alcohol don't mix. If you are going out for the evening and intend to drink, leave your car at home or nominate a non-drinker to drive.
    • Don’t accept rides with anyone you know may have been drinking alcohol or taking drugs.
    • If you’re on your P plates, your blood alcohol concentration must be 0.
    • Don't drive if you are tired or feel stressed. Take regular breaks while driving and be aware of the symptoms of fatigue (sore or tired eyes, discomfort, boredom or highway hypnosis).
    • Don't become distracted by your passengers or what is happening around you. Watch the road ahead and be aware of potential hazards.
    • Leave plenty of time for emergencies (punctures, accidents etc). The faster you drive, the less time you have to react to hazards.
    • Under the new ‘Anti-hoon’ legislation, people who endanger innocent lives through reckless behaviour can now have their vehicles impounded. Find out more from the Office of Road Safety.
    • You are more likely to be involved in a fatal crash if you are using a mobile phone as it erodes your concentration levels. Using a hand-held mobile whilst driving could land you with a $200 fine and the loss of 3 demerit points.
    • It is illegal to ride in the load space of any utility and flat tray trucks or panel vans.

      8. Know the law.

        • There are many laws that may affect you during Leavers - make sure your Leavers is memorable, not regrettable.
